The Caledonian Society of Barcaldine was founded in 1902. The Foundation Members were Messrs Alec. Calder and Donald McMillan, and their foundation piper, Mr. James Kennedy. In 1916, it also had ‘lady members’.

Interestingly, it was said ‘Wherever a few Scotsmen congregate an effort was made to have a “Burns Night” ‘. That effort is still being made in Barcaldine auspiced by those with Scottish origins.

In her memoir, Rose Kempson (a long time resident of Barcaldine) remembers the Caledonian Sports Association day in about 1916 or 1918. She recalls an impromptu stage was built at the Showgrounds for the event. Scotsmen came from Cairns to Bundaberg to dance the Highland Fling and other Scottish dances in their kilts.
