‘In March 1936 the town and district experienced the worst flooding it had seen. Pipes under the new bitumen in Oak and Beech Streets could not carry off the downpour and east of the intersection became a lake through which A. A. Dyer was able to row a boat. By evening as run-off reached it, Lagoon Creek stretched 100 yards across. Railway lines were damaged everywhere. Trains directed from the coastal route, where the Burdekin bridge was submerged, were blocked by washouts near Ilfracombe. The north ad south bound mail trains met there and passengers transferred by walking across the damaged section’ (Hoch, I. 2008, p.93).
