In the final week of September 1986, Barcaldine came alive as hundreds of older residents returned to take part in the Barcaldine Centenary Festival celebrations. The town was decorated with celebratory lighting and logo banners. A packed week of activities included concerts, sporting fixtures, a garden competition, a Westech Field display and the publication of a Shire history. It was climaxed by a grand ball at which local girl, Kerry Thompson, was crowned winner of a Queen competition. The festivities were officially opened by by the Governor-General, Sir Ninian Stephen, on September 23, 1986.
