Cattle

In 1950 the Cudmore family which had owned Tara since 1890 sold out to brothers, Lloydm Owen and James Walker. The property was burnt out in 1951 and it was almost three years before it could be stocked but the Walkers went on to establish Santa Gertrudis cattle in the district. In 1983 Sir James Walker held his 25th annual stud sale at Cumberland.

By 1954 nine properties on the east of the shire were reported to be stocked with cattle. The fifties were such wet years that sheep men had to battle to save their stock from fly strike, worms, lice, water logged feet and burr infested wool.
